Program for Master Degree in Marxist Philosophy

Brief Introduction

The Major of Marxist philosophy, being an important secondary discipline in the Department of Philosophy, mainly concentrates on studies of dialectical materialism and historical materialism. Its main fields include the theory, history, and application of Marxist philosophy. The history of this subject can be traced back to the Department of Philosophy & History of Communist Party of China established in 1952. Officially affiliated to the newly established Department of Philosophy of the School of Humanities in 2002, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to set up a master degree authorization unit in 2003. Currently, three major research orientations are covered including value philosophy, political philosophy and foreign Marxist philosophy. Our teaching and academic staff includes 8 members within 4 professors (including 2 second-grade professors and the only one tenured professor of non-law major in our university), 3 associate professors and 1 lecturer, whose studies all focus on the mentioned directions. Lastly, it is with strong academic atmosphere and excellent academic achievements in our subject.

Educational Objective

Our goal is to cultivate compound and innovative talents with sound value and outlook for world and life, solid expertise in his specialized field and excellent mastery of theoretical knowledge, fine academic literacy and innovative ability, physical and mental well-being and excellent morals with academic skills, in order to meet the requirement of contemporary social development.

Specific requirement:

1. to acquire solid knowledge in his specialized field and exceptional capacity of scientific research, to understand the main achievements and latest developments of academic research domestically and internationally, and to be competent for practical work such as teaching and scientific research;

2. to focus on the training of philosophical methods and thinking, to cultivate the awareness of concerning for China’s practical problems, and to improve basic ability to solve major theoretical and practical problems encountered in modernization.

Major Tracks

1. The philosophy of value discusses the basis, characteristics and the laws of development in value activities, consciousness and ideas, and conducts research on the value of life and practice. It is not only an important part of elementary theories in philosophy, but also possessed with universal meaning in methodology. It is the forefront field and newly emerged branch in contemporary philosophy.

2. Political philosophy attaches importance to the interpretation of the classic text of Marxism on the contemporary significance of China's modernization. It serves the construction of contemporary Chinese Marxist political philosophy based on the practice of socialism with Chinese characteristics, through grasping the logic of development, methodological and cross-nation characteristics of classic theories, at the same time absorbing the theoretical resources of political philosophy domestically and internationally.

3. Foreign Marxist Philosophy intends to grasp the history of foreign Marxism developed since the 20th century in the context of comparing the classic Marxism and the Second International and the Third. In the meantime, it concentrates on relating the international academic cutting edge to the philosophy of value and political philosophy of Marxism.

Training Methods

1.To implement a training mechanism combining tutorial system with guidance from tutorial group. To establish a postgraduate guidance team taken charge by leaders of disciplines (disciplinary direction), also combined with famous experts, specialists and tutors in the discipline (disciplinary direction) inside and outside our university.

2.To take curriculum and research as principal, supplemented by thesis writing. To strengthen the dynamic management of the training program, so that the cultivation of graduate students and scientific research are closely combined. To implement case instruction and thematic seminars, to conduct academic reports and thesis selection, and to realize the reciprocal interaction in teaching and learning.

3.To open up and create new forms and channels to encourage postgraduates participating in joint training both on and off campus and at home and abroad.

Eligibility

Each student must complete the learning tasks at all stages in accordance with the school’s graduate educational objective, training methods, and training requirements. S/he also should complete the credits required and all other requirements of his/her major, and submit a thesis reaching the postgraduate requirement for graduation.

Each student should possess an excellent comprehensive ability, solid expertise with virtuous integrity, professional dedication and social responsibility. S/he should abide by academic norms and uphold academic ethics.

Assessment

1.To take staged assessments and to strengthen the inspection of degree courses, semester thesis and thesis proposal. To conduct in various ways such as interview, thesis and defense in accordance with the relevant regulations of the state and the university.

2.Credits can only be earned after passing assessment, which is conducted in accordance with the provisions of The Curriculum and Management of Postgraduate Courses of CUPL.

3.Credits can only be earned after reading reports, semester papers and other training sections adopted through examination method, accompanied by comments and examination results given by instructor or relevant teachers. The professional practice section is compulsory for academic master postgraduate. It can be carried out through form of specialized internships as principal. Other forms like joint cultivation of production, teaching and research bases and social surveys, and so on can also be accepted. The period should generally be no less than 3 months, and it is compulsory to submit a report of at least 6,000 words with the appraisal opinion from the practice unit.

4. The mid-term assessment is carried out after completing courses required and other training sections stipulated in the program, and also after earning the required credits. It is generally placed at the end of the third semester or the beginning of the fourth. It must be completed before the thesis proposal. The results of the mid-term assessment are qualified and unqualified. Failure results in impossibility of thesis proposal. The specific requirements shall be carried out in accordance with the Regulations on the Training of Academic Postgraduates of CUPL.

5.The thesis proposal is conducted in accordance with the Regulations on the Training of Academic Postgraduates of CUPL and should be supervised by a committee composed of at least 3 specialists acquired tutorship.

6. There is a pre-defense before the formal thesis defense. (For details, see the tenth point below in “Defense and Degree”) Students must finally submit a degree thesis that meets academic standards and is of acceptable quality.

7.Graduate students are encouraged to actively participate in academic activities. Each postgraduate student need participate in no less than 10 academic reports and academic lectures organized by all subjects in our school before pre-defense.

Thesis

The graduation thesis is a comprehensive reflection of the capacity of scientific research, the proficiency of theoretical and specialized knowledge and also innovation.

The theme of the graduation thesis should be independently selected referring to themes from the forefront and with important application value in specialized subject under the guidance of the supervisor. Innovation and academic breakthroughs are cherished. Specific requirements are as follows:

1. The graduation thesis should be done independently by the postgraduate students themselves with strictly following the academic norms.

2. The graduation thesis should conform to the prescribed format with no less than30,000 words in main body.

3. The graduation thesis should meet the rest requirements of the national degree regulations for master thesis.

4. The progress in writing the graduation thesis should be follow strict procedures. Students should pass the thesis proposal before the end of the fourth semester, complete the first draft before the fifth semester, and revise and finalize the thesis according to the feedback in the pre-defense.

Defense and Degree

1. The degree application must meet the statutory requirements stipulated by the national degree regulations.

2. The materials related to degree application must be complete, comprehensive and authentic.

3. The pre-defense system must be implemented to ensure the quality of the graduation thesis. Failure in the pre-defense means the inability to enter the defense process. The application for the pre-defense should be done in the semester before the formal application for a degree, which is usually in June or December of each year and completed within 1-2 weeks before the winter and summer vacation. The pre-defense committee consists of 3 to 5 members. The application for the defense can only be recommended by tutors after revision according to the pre-defense that passed and meeting the prescribed regulations.

4. The members of the defense committee should meet the statutory conditions and requirements. Inspection for originality, evaluation and evasion of the graduation thesis should be conducted in accordance with the relevant regulations. Experts with senior professional and technical positions in the practical department can be recruited to participate in the defense committee if the thesis is involved in practical issues.

5. On the basis of carefully reviewing the graduation thesis, the committee should issue fair, serious, serious and responsible questions and secret ballots to the applicant, and make recommendations to the college degree evaluation sub-committee for conferring a master degree or not.

6. The award of a master degree should meet the requirements of the Management for Degree-Awarding of CUPL(CUPL [2016] No. 44) and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees.

The courses are mainly composed of general courses (political theory, first foreign language, subject methodology and dissertation writing, Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era), specialized courses (specialized core courses, specialized main courses, specialized practice) and non-specialized courses.

The academic master program is implemented with a credit system. The course credits obtained by postgraduate students should be at least 37 credits with other training sections no less than 4 credits. The former includes a total of 12 credits within 5 general courses, a total of 15 credits within 5 specialized courses (including specialized practice) and no less than 10 credits for non-specialized courses (of which at least one elective cross-subject course is required for 2 credits each). In addition, interdisciplinary postgraduate and postgraduate with equivalent educational qualification must complete two supplementary courses for 2 credits each. For them, the credits are no less than 41 credits which means the total credits are no less than 45 credits.

1. Reading and Reviewing Studies (assessed by tutor group)

Reading and reviewing Studies are key section for postgraduate students to lay a solid expertise in specific field. It is the way to master the academic tradition and research context, and to train their ability of understanding and generalization. The form of report should meet the requirement before and possess the purpose to train logical expression. All types of postgraduate students should undergo this training.

The master postgraduates should read intensively no less than 2 specialized books per semester from the first to the fourth semester. The books should be assigned by tutors. Inspections can be chosen between book report and book review.

Research project is an important way for graduate students to carry out scientific research practice and train scientific research capabilities. It is one of the basic requirements for postgraduate training and one of the basic qualities they should possess. Master postgraduates could participate in certain research projects by participating in tutors’ scientific research projects, scientific research projects of university or practice department, and the institute’s own research projects in order to submit corresponding scientific research results as the basis for assessment. Credits can be earned once passed.
